Theater
The Project for Local Arts and Youth is dedicated to providing an environment where children and adults can celebrate artistic and technical gifts, create in a safe atmosphere, and celebrate after a lot of very, very hard work. All proceeds from this performance go towards The Project for Local Arts & Youth for upcoming projects. Let’s PLAY!
Olivia & The Dragon
The Project for Local Arts and Youth presents Olivia & the Dragon, a classically magical story about an elf with a special gift, her wicked aunt Silverynn who is trying to destroy the peaceful kingdom of Greenstem, and a mysterious dragon who reeks of cinnamon. Filled with laughter and music, Olivia & the Dragon is an original event not to be missed!
About The Project for Local Arts and Youth
We believe that people desire community. We also believe that as Christians, we should live that way. PLAY encourages such community by providing a common goal in which everyone must work together, complimenting strengths, and shoring up weaknesses. Here, a 60 year old can work with an 8 year old. Here, a person with stage fright can grow, knowing they are in a safe, loving and creative environment.
We also believe the world is not changed by a message told in a story, but a gospel lived in our lives. Our plays carry themes that are honorable, worthy, and appropriate. PLAY does not exist for our benefit alone, but for the betterment of the community in which God has placed us. We do not engage in what is acceptable to consumers, but what is necessary for people starving for communal expression of God's love.
Our core creative team is comprised of three individuals: Mo Dickenson, Temple Sherburne and Jason Woods. They make decisions in unison for upcoming shows, casting, and delegation. Together, they have cast a vision to create a safe environment for all ages to come and create, be encouraged, overcome fears, and grow in community.
Auditions
TBD for our next project in 2012.
FAQ's
What is the time commitment?
Due to the schedules of our volunteers, many of whom work or have numerous responsibilities, we schedule the performances for later in the year, leaving several months to rehearse twice a week, sometimes three.
Why are there auditions?
We want to cast the right people in the right roles. We try to find a way for everyone to be involved. To us, no part is too small. We are an ensemble producing a project, not individual stars. The people who move trees on stage are as critical as the people who have lead roles.
Is there a cost?
When you join the Project for Local Arts & Youth, we charge a small fee that is considerably lower than other theatrical group offerings in Jacksonville.
Why is there a ticket price?
We fund our shows exclusively by donations and ticket sales. In addition, a ticket price communicates what people are coming to see is quality. We believe you will find the value for the price outstanding.
What is the age limit for participation?
Effective this year, participants must be a minimum of 8 years old, and children must be 8 at the time of auditions to participate. All ages above 8 are welcome to help. We also have members who are 60, so you’re never too old to PLAY.
Can I donate?
Yes. We now operate exclusively out of ticket sales and donations. Funding is used for materials, props, paint, costumes, marketing, etc. It takes a great deal of money and work to PLAY.

The Wind in the Willows

Press play to view a short preview of our show:
The Wind in the Willows was first published in 1908, by Kenneth Grahame. Somewhat obscure in America, it is classic of children’s literature, set in pastoral England, following the adventures of the timid Mr. Mole, the optimistic Mr. Rat, and the wealthy and eccentric Toad of Toad Hall, who drops one craze for another with exuberance. The novel is notable for its warm and gentle pacing, and sense of camaraderie.
